John D. Roderick
John Roderick is a third-generation woodworker based in Philadelphia, PA. Born in Mechanicsburg, PA, John began his carpentry training alongside his stepfather, a builder. After earning a Bachelor of Arts in Environmental Studies and Geography and Urban Studies from Temple University, he began working as assistant project manager at Daedalus Design Build, for which he has led projects ranging from whole home renovations, adaptive reuse of existing structures, new construction, and historic preservation. All the while, he has continued his training, attending workshops at Boston's acclaimed North Bennet Street School, crafting pieces for private clients, and founding his own workshop in the Francisville neighborhood in Philadelphia.
Today, John specializes in creating finely crafted pieces that balance form with function. His favorite projects are those that require a thoughtful, collaborative approach to an interesting design challenge. To John, a successful project is one in which he has worked alongside his client to create something beautiful and unique, a piece that grows and evolves with the people who use it, and that highlights the beauty and character of the wood.
